Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI)

The Urban Design Research Institute is a forum that supports interaction among architects, urban designers and professionals from related fields such as urban economics, sociology, planning, conservation and history. As a public charitable trust established in 1984, UDRI aims to enrich the understanding of the urban environment and work towards its improvement.

UDRI's objectives are to generate awareness on various issues concerning the city, provide content to public debate and discuss on urban issues, facilitate a greater role for architects and designers in urban planning and advocate for public policies on the above.

The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation has supported UDRI for a joint initiative with NAGAR for auditing open spaces. The support has been towards development of technology and printing and publishing of the report. Support has also been extended towards UDRI's involvement in the Mumbai DP24 Seven. As a part of this initiative- UDRI will be involved in creating public awareness and people's capacity building for a more informed participation in the DP24 Seven and develop educational material on Urbanism.

NAGAR, NGO Alliance for Governance and Renewal

NGO Alliance for Governance and Renewal (NAGAR) is a Society and Public Trust based in Mumbai. The NAGAR resource and information centre (NRIC) supports communication between Government agencies and the community through the Right to Information Act.

NAGAR covers three key constituents: CLEAN Sweep, which focuses on solid waste management, CITISPACE, for the restoration of open spaces, and CLEAN-Air, devoted to the management of air-pollution issues.

The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation has supported CITISPACE in conducting a survey of open spaces in 24 wards of Mumbai, listing playgrounds, recreational grounds, encroached land and green spaces. The survey's first phase has been published in a book named 'Breathing Space - a Fact File of 600 Reserved Public Open Spaces in Greater Mumbai.'
